Chapter 6

Chapter 6

Romans 6:1-4

Paul asks the reader that should we continue to sin if Grace is plentiful? He answers and says, ‘God forbid’. He then asks another question to the reader. How can we live when we are already dead to the sin that is passed down and spread throughout all of the generations in the world? Another question he asks is this. Do we as believers do not realize that we are baptized into Jesus Christ’s death? I believe what he means by this is that we were dead because of sin, and Jesus Christ was slain as the propitiation of all man’s sins. If he died for our sins on the cross, we are supposed to die with our sins as well. And just like Christ arose again, we are supposed to be rose up again in the spirit. Life begins in the Spirit; it does not necessarily begin on earth. Yes, we are born on the earth, and our bodies return to the earth when it is no longer functional, but our life comes from the Spirit, and the Lord of the Spirits is YAHWEH by name. So, by the power of YAHWEH, he rose up Jesus Christ after three days after his death, to give us a live representation of what happens to us in the Spirit when we accept the gospel, believe in Jesus, and repent for all our sins. As Paul states in verse four, we should also walk in the Spirit (newness of life) after we are baptized in the name of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Romans 6:5-10

If we repent and turn away from our sins, being dead unto our sins, then just like Jesus, we will receive the Holy Spirit to rise up in our spirit-man and become anew, just like our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In verse six, Paul needs us to understand that if this is our choice to be dead to our sins and rise up again through the power of the Holy Spirit, that from the moment of that decision we should no longer serve sin. Serving sin is the work of the flesh. It is an act or a deed that you do to cultivate, just like how you plant a seed in the ground and watch it grow over time. In verse seven, it says that he who is dead (separated from) is freed from sin. And if we die in Christ, we live forevermore. It is apparent through scripture that when Christ died and rose again, he did not die a second time but ascended into Heaven to be with His father. Therefore, death has no rule/reign/dominion over him no more. And it is the same for us if we do not cultivate a life of sin.

Romans 6:11-13

Apostle Paul explains again that if we are dead in Christ we are dead to sin and if we are alive in Christ, even if our flesh dies, we live forevermore with him. He then gives a warning to not let sin reign (rule) over any part of our mortal body. It is important that he used the word “mortal” to show how temporary the body is. And when something is ruling over you, you have to obey it. The lust of the flesh is the yearning of things that are opposite of God. Romans chapter 1 explains what those things are for the one who adapts to a reprobate mind. In verse thirteen, he fashions the limbs of a man as instruments, doubling down on the works of the flesh or of God. Remember that Jesus Christ paid for our sins. There is a reward for every work that you do, and the reward you get for producing sin, unrighteousness, and ungodliness is death. The reward that you produce for working righteousness and godliness is eternal life through only the power of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 6:14-18

In verse fourteen and fifteen, Apostle Paul reiterates his opening statement in this chapter. Since we are living under grace, which is by the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, should we continue to sin? Paul answers and says, ‘God forbid’. He continues his question by asking, do we not know whoever you choose to serve you also choose to obey? And if you serve sin and obey the lusts of the flesh, you are rewarded death, but if you serve righteousness and obey God, you are rewarded life? In verse seventeen he shows gratitude that once you did obey sin, so when you decide to turn from sin by allowing your heart to obey the laws of God, you were then made free from sin, becoming a servant to righteousness. And this goes back to my point of the two businesses being the kingdom of darkness and the kingdom of heaven.

Romans 6:19-23

In verse nineteen, Paul is relating to the church of Rome by stating that he is speaking on his own accord, because he is a man who obeyed the lust of his flesh (infirmity) as well. And he says that since you at one point in time used your hands, feet, mind, and body to perform sin, use those same hands, feet, mind, and body to perform acts of righteousness, to become a Holy person unto God. Paul shows us the dichotomy of sin and righteousness, death and life in verse twenty. Paul asks the reader, what did you gain from living in sin that you are now ashamed of? Nothing but death is what you gained. But become a servant of God and watch yourself gain holiness which then leads to eternal life. And then he famously states in the twenty-third verse that ‘the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through our Lord Jesus Christ’. Everything we do here on earth has a cost that we constantly incur as we go about life that will have to be paid at an appointed time.
